Of all the prayers and invocations I have learned over many years of religious study, the Lord’s Prayer, also known as the Our Father, is one of the most powerful and transformative.

In many countries, this is a time of spiritual ferment. New forms of spiritual practice are appearing alongside revived ancient forms. Along with the decline of institutional religion we find everywhere a surge of interest in nonsectarian spiritualities. People are again asking, What is prayer? How shall I pray? Will it make a difference in my daily life? This is a good time to rummage in our attic, digging out treasures that still hold untold value. The Lord’s Prayer is one such treasure that can be enjoyed by all human beings of goodwill.
